CGA releases much-anticipated Next Steps Action Plan
After 12 months of consultations, today the Canadian Grief Alliance released Next Steps Action Plan: A Strategic Approach to Grief Literacy and Grief Support in Canada The report calls for national leadership, collaboration, and concrete actions to bring Canada in line with other countries that #MakeGriefAPriority.
Recommendations:
The report makes 5 recommendations that build on the findings of the cross-country consultations, leverage successful models in other countries and respond to Canada’s patchwork of grief services that have been overwhelmed by the volume and complexity of grief resulting from national and local tragedies.
- Improve grief literacy through targeted public awareness campaigns and community engagement.
- Adopt a public health approach to provide accessible and tailored grief services, particularly for underserved populations, that includes approaches and responses to grief developed by and for Indigenous, Black and racialized communities.
- Enhance support for grief professionals and volunteers through expanded training and education.
- Foster a deeper understanding of grief in Canada through national data collection and dedicated research funding.
- Establish a Canadian Centre for Grief to coordinate national policy, program support, and emergency responses.
