New video series - Grieving a pet
•Canadian Grief Alliance
In a new video series, we talk to Melissa about grief related to the death of a beloved pet. Melissa is the co-founder of Through Rough Times, a service in Toronto for people receiving healthcare treatment who need care for their pets. She talks about her grief and the loss of her dog Luna, and how she now supports others who are grieving the loss of a pet.
In her interview, Melissa explores the unique aspects of grief when a pet dies, including unrecognized grief, disenfranchised grief, and the sense of judgment she experienced around what losses are worthy of grief and to what extent that grief is acceptable. She also discusses the unconditional love and special relationships people have with their pets and how she was surprised by the depth of her grief when Luna died. She recommends acknowledging your grief and honouring the impact your pet had on your life.
We are grateful to Melissa for talking to us about pet grief, and we hope you’ll explore her video series here.
